  • Weed identification

Last year we had masses of a tall spiny bramble like weed at the bottom of the garden. In the end I went over it with the lawnmower, sprayed it with ***** fluid and it went away. It's back with a vengeance. Seems to spread by putting up suckers from an extensive root system, and the young leaves look very similar to raspberry leaves. What is it, and how do I get rid of it?

You may have to post a pic to get an accurate answer Doive.

Sounds just like brambles How does it differ?

The stems are green and fleshy, and are covered in tiny red spines, different to the standard bramble. Plus, they neither flowered nor produced fruits last year. I'll take a photo and put it up later.

Many of the rambles around here are green and fleshy with red spines when young. And they don't produce any fruit. Totally pointless!

Could it be an ornamental blackberry?

See, spraying doesn't work. You need to keep doing it: which proves it doesn't work

              Dig it out.

I have the same thing in my garden, where there has never been a bramble. I assume it's seedlings from blackberries that have gone in the compost heap
