  • too late for onion sets?

    hello everyone

I have loads on onion sets left from when I planted about 6 weeks ago. I know it says in everything I have read to plant onion sets in March/early April, but I have just built a new bed and have the room to plant more. Does anyone have any experience planting them this late?

    many thanks

I honestly couldnt say but I hope you're okay to. I dont think it would hurt to try a few. I know I would but then Ive only just started growing so am in that experimental stage I guess. I planted some onion seeds in a tray a week ago, knowing it was too late but I didnt think id stand a chance sowing them straight into the bed. I dont expect anything,im just hoping for the best. So I say go for it and plant away!

I just found the onion sets I bought weeks ago. Once the weather dries off a bit and I decide where to plant them, they will go in. either they will grow or they won't - nothing to lose by planting them.

Onions are sensitive to day light hours. they may or may not bolt or you might find that they are not too big ( call them shallots! ) whatever you will be unlikely to ripen and dry them enough for good storage but hey, use em up quick- as you say Shirley- there is 'nothing to lose'

thanks all...thats in then, they are going in tomorrow (rain just struck here) and I'll have a bash. at the worst they will be little, but that is OK, better than them sitting in a net and rotting and never achieving their potential.

          cheers :-)
