  • Are these Jerusalem Artichokes?

    Hi all,

I've taken over a second plot on the allotment and have spotted what I assume to be Jerusalem artichokes growing - am I correct? If not, what else can they be?

Yes indeedly, they are the same variety as I grow by the looks of it - not grenade shaped like the ones you usually see in the shops, thinner skinned.
Get digging, if you get enough speed up you may even start going downwards faster than the roots of the well established plants...

                  Thanks for all the replies.

I'm guessing I'd better start learning to like them then :-)

Once you have them on the plot............you'll always have them. I had grown mine for about three years without tasting them. Decided to dig em up and decided that because I had dug them up I'd try eating them.
Guess what...............I likes em! Going to put some back in but I can already see choke shoots in my tatty bed!

Don't know about you guys, but that doesn't matter to me up here. Or at least it didn't last year - the two co-existed quite happily, in fact, despite planting late in May I had enormous tatties (the size of two fists) and then a small crop of JA's afterwards.
Digging up the tatties did disturb the JA's (I just stuck the stems straight back in), so I reckon that stunted the bulking up of the tubers; hereabouts, maybe because of the poor light levels, they very obviously did not bulk up until late in the winter (almost March) - so that's an idea for keeping them under control if you don't find that all your extra Sassenach sunshine means they are romping away midsummer.
Dare I whisper it ? I could have done with a bigger crop of JA's this year. I really wanted more... I was thinking longingly of my old allotment where the new plot holder was delighted to have me come and take some away...

Funny how Jerusalem Artichokes are never an option on a restaurant menu innit.

JA Soup was the lunchtime special in a restaurant that I went to recently. Fortunately, nobody seemed to have ordered it
