  • I love Monty Don but .....

...if only he would be specific about how he gets rid of slugs! Last year Monty Don described in detail how he attracts snails and then "disposes of them". I went looking for information on his method of "disposal". His website was (and still is) "under construction"! So I resorted to contacting the gardening section of the BBC and no matter how clearly I put my query they could not/would not tell me how Monty Don "disposes" of his slugs. Their suggestions (not Monty's) were put them in the waste or take them away from the home and dump them - neither of which I really want to do. So how do people get rid of their slugs?

Anyway, another point about our deal old Monty is that he seems to be getting into quite a lot of hot water. Last year he got embroiled in a row about non-organic gardening. He insists on getting rid of pests by hand (by squashing them, I guess) and does not advocate pesticides. The pesticide companies were up in arms about it, as was the BBC who promised that he would be encouraged to recommend pesticides - which he won't!

He was also criticised this year by growers, for telling viewers not to plant out their early flowers in this cold weather. They complained they had to dump lorry loads of plants because no-one was buying them. His advice, of course, was right.

Who'd have thought that such a nice guy would come under such pressure. This never happened to Alan Titchmarsh - did it...?

My questions are (a) how do you get rid of slugs and (b) who do you prefer - Monty or Alan? I don't know the answer to (a) but I do know who I prefer...

If you search YouTube for his series called fork to fork in one of the episodes he states and is shown using Nematodes! Hope this helps
In the following link you can follow my recent progress on the plot

      A. salty slug pot of death
      B. Monty. Sorry, but Alan just is too good and nice for me. And he always seemed to put swags of rope around every bit of deck he got near.

      Like Monty's blog a lot.

Beer followed by cutting in half and leaving them as a warning, but there are so many in the poly that I'm sending for nematodes, which he has stated he uses.
Monty. Alan should stick to writing cheap p0rn or whatever he does.
I do think there's a niche for a damn good veg programme which I'd like to see the kitchen garden guys at either Barnsdale or at Raymond Blanc's place LMAQS.

A-I use nematodes and a vigorous stomping for any left over (I tried the bucket of salty water method but they just kept climbing out, felt more like I was seasoning them then killing them!).
B- Monty. He seems to do more actual gardening whereas Alan just supervises other people putting up gazebos...

That wasn't on Gardener's World though, it was on Groundforce - and that was what he was supposed to do on that program

I loved Alan's How to be a Gardener series, especially The Productive Garden

Pat them on the head and give them a talking to.
Not very keen on either but at least Monty has principles.

Geoff Hamilton was the best, he got me interested in gardening and veg, Alan I thought took the veg side of gardening out of the public eye and only dabbled with it but Monty has gone back to the roots and the veg garden, but that my opinion

Jim McColl is the star of beechgrove again a veg lover but the introduction of Chris Beardshaw is a good move into the 21st century
