I quite liked Alan on GW as I remember him regularly questioning the way that things were supposed to be done and encouraging people to do things that worked for them even if it wasn't the recognised way. Struggle a bit with Monty although like the guy. Think he's stuck with a rubbish format which he never looks quite comfortable with - that said, much much better than Toby or whatever the last bloke was called and Joe Swift has me grasping for the remote to fast forward through his rubbish design section.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for all your replies. I didn't know what nematodes were but now have found (below) this really helpful (and somewhat amusing) article. But I am still in quandary about what to do with the bodies. Where does one chuck them? I really couldn't bring myself to cutting them in two or stomping all over them.

Darcyvuqua and/or Pies - I found the Youtube fork to fork videos but not the one about nematodes. Do you have a link?
VirginVegGrower - I absolutely agree with your suggestion for a series dedicated to veg growing.
And, yes, Geoff Hamilton was wonderful - before my time but I've seen footage.
I also liked Alan Titchmarsh's more recent gardening shows but Monty is very watchable, he has an earthy quality about him and he loves his dog - what's not to like...

Don't know who's the best gardener, but I prefer Monty's presenting style. Tichmarsh's voice irritates me. Sorry, Alan, I'm sure you're a lovely bloke, but there it is. I prefer the lovely Carol Klein and the lovelier Alys thingy, though. Whatever happened to Charlie Dimmock?
As for slugs, I don't know what Monty does, but I put organic 'Slug Bait' down. The slimy little bastards ignore it completely, but at least I feel I'm doing something.Last edited by StephenH; 17-05-2013, 09:58 AM.

Pick the slugs off and cut them in half.
I like Monty and the current format. The one person I can't stand though is Carol, she just does my head in. I do like Alan's How to be a Gardener series, loved watching that.

I empty the slug pot into the compost as long as it is one that is working quickly, otherwise into the bottom of a hedge. I don't add any water to my slug pot - if they are crawling out it is too dilute!
Didn't Charlie move to Australia because the British press gave her such a rough time?Le Sarramea https://jgsgardening.blogspot.com/

Alternatively, perhaps having a resident hedgehog might be the answer. I saw one about a year ago and there are signs it's still around. I have no idea how effective they are though.

Mine get chopped in half. My husband thinks I do it for stress relief. I hope I'm not quite that sick in the head, but it does seem to be the only way that works. Although, now I have chickens I tend to give them to the hens. I like Monty and Alan, but I have to admit, Chris Beardshaw is a nice bit of eye candy.

Prefer Alan Titchmarsh, he had the background through the RHS training to be able to explain things better and came over as more confident.
Strange to read how many go by the voice, I tend to reach for the remote and mute the TV when Monty appears, although most often with Monty the channel gets changed altogether.

Loved Alan, but he's from Yorkshire and has changed his accent!!! Look at old stuff then compare it to new, think he's had classes on affecting your accent! It does my head in! Be Yorkshire and be proud of your accent man! The way he says gooold on the Chelsea flower show had me cringing! Why oh why oh why? If people can't understand your accent they can put the subtitles on! I love Alys wish she'd come back on tv and I liked Toby! Slugs go in the bin, then when they crawl to the top I flick em back down again and again, then by the time they get to the top it's getting emptied - someone else problem!...... OO! You don't think they have a homing device do you?You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...
I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!

Monty is alright, quite like watching him, I wish they would get rid of carol and joe though, find them really annoying, I usually fast forward when there on
Would be much better with alys fowler on the show, I reckon she's the person that got me started gardening
Toby was alright aswellLast edited by Urban; 20-05-2013, 01:36 AM.

I do all sorts of things to slugs, it is war after all. I squish them under foot, chop them up, chase them with a match, and pick them up and launch them into the neighbouring field. I've even been known to pull them apart if I catch them being amorous. I haven't had many in the garden this year though.
As for monty I like him, he's very chilled. He's not my favourite though I like harry dodson.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
