  • Recycling compost from containers, pots and baskets

I've just emptied all the previous years (some 2/3 years ) compost from all the various containers, pots, hanging baskets etc. I now have 4 large sacks of various old compost that will have very little in the way of nutrients. I have no open ground to spread this on as everything is grown in containers. How can I utilise the compost (I was thinking of adding fertiliser and earthing up the spud bags with some)

Good idea Borored. There are a few other threads on here about re-using compost if you have a look.

I reuse my old compost all the time, just don't use any that has had plants in that were diseased.

I only use new compost for seed cutting as I like to know that is sterile.

I did a little experiment this spring to see how the different composts fared against each other.

Re-used compost with a sprinkle of Blood Fish & Bone came out best of all, better than any of the other (peat free) composts I'd bought or been given (Fertile Fibre; Arther Bowers; Aldi; B+Q)

It might work, I once grew potatoes in last years compost, I put a black plastic sack in one of those old carboid frames. Potatoes grew alright, not a great deal of flavour and they required a lot of watering in order to reach the bottom, but potatoes all the same

I add BFB and just reuse it.
