I've had really good results using garden rubbish bags, bit like tarpaulin material - punch a few drainage holes in the bottom with a knife, put about 9inch compost in the bottom and rolled the bag down. As they start to grown roll up the bag and top up with compost.

Okay I went back to b & q today for seed potatoes and compost and to my surprise all seed potatoes were reduced to just 1p! I have picked up a few bag but some of them have very long sprouts ( upto 6 inches maybe), do I plant these as they are or trim them down?

Earlies and lates merely describe the time it takes for your spuds to mature, so you can still sow earlies now and get a relatively quick crop or plant 'lates' and leave them to the end of the season, blight permitting, to get a larger crop.
Last year, for various reasons, I didn't plant my potatoes until the beginning of June and we still had a reasonable crop from them.
