  • rusty garlic

    Hi all,
My overwintered garlic has developed rust. I've run a search on the forum and it was suggested that I either try a garlic spray or cut the affected leaves or both. Trouble is nearly every leaf has it! Any suggestions and has anyone tried the garlic spray?
    Many thanks

apparently rust is caused or exacerbated by low light/shade and high moisture. Affected plants should be removed and burned.

My overwintered garlic gets rust virtually every year. I ignore it, and harvest the garlic bulbs when ready, then dry them, string them, and use all the way through until they start sprouting mid-spring. Then plant some more in a different location in October.... and then those get rust in the spring, I ignore it, and harvest the garlic bulbs when ready, etc.

        Wellie
Hijacking Raine's thread here, but having been told to cut off the rusted leaves from my garlic and NOT compost them, have done this twice now and I can see it starting again. Didn't have this problem last year and it's only one lot that's got it so your reply was a great relief to read, will relax now, couldn't bear the thought of pulling it all up and burning it.

I'm with wellie on this one can't remember a year without it. Apparantly you get smaller bulbs. What the heck- I wouldn't be burning the crop. I was a buit annoyed tho cos there was hardly any till this week

Thanks all for the advice- i'd be gutted to pull it all and burn it especially since it was overwintered!
            thanks
