well ,i wondered why the carrots and parsnips were not very evident, even though they were sown a month or more ago,i went outside last night and it looked like a rerun of the derby, nine slugs, virtually in a row ,chomping their way across the carrot seedlings,so after the longest, coldest spring in donkeys years,i now lose the few remaining rows to slugs, they certainly got removed but it looks like i will put the cabbage and kale into that spot, its sunny out but bl**** cold so i cant be bothered spending the time resowing, did that 3 times last year for the carrots and got zero, not one,and as it is getting really hard to do the bending i will put in the greens...french beans have been in for over a month,no growth at all,it seems the tuesday after the bank holiday was our summer, even stuff in the greenhouse is oh so slow, toms seem okay (if a bit small),but pepper/chillies are rubbish, sown in the start of march, now in the greenhouse, and only 3ins tall, never known it like this, even last year was better, and that summer ended about the last week of april,a pal round the corner says he has never seen everything so poor before, and he has been gardening for over 60yrs in this area,it is important to us as being disabled we rely on the veg patch for food and already do the cameron choice, heat or eat,or at least the slugs do.....

My first year in France was like that - why is nothing germinating? And then I found that it was, but being hoovered straight off just as you describe. I've given up on carrots, parsnips are sown with radishes which the slugs like better, and everything else is sown in pots and planted out, often with collars made from copper pipe. I've still lost half my peppers.
It is a awful, awful year.Le Sarramea https://jgsgardening.blogspot.com/
