The stench of nettle fertiliser...

OMG! I decided to try a bit of my nettle fertiliser tonight. I sloshed a small amount into the watering can and then diluted it. I watered the tomato plants and sweetcorn in the polytunnel with it, then went outside and watered the courgette plants and peas with it.

When I went back in the polytunnel it absolutely STANK in there of the nettle tea. I seriously hope the smell will go away quickly.

I wonder if it is worth watering carrots with it before/after thinning to hide the smell from carrot flies.

I cannot believe how much it stinks.

I always make fertillizing with nettle/comfrey tea the last job before I leave the lottie for just this reason.swmbo still complains about the smell on my clothes when I get home other allotment holders have complained about the smell from 6 plots away.try leaving an open bucketfull in your shed if there is a theiving problem.

Sniggers - feel sorry for those who slosh it around a lot as they water, getting in on their clothes and having to drive home with said stench

Rancid and like fertiliser or stagnant water it's free and fantastic for your plants. But then I like the smell of muck. Tizz why I lives in the crunchee innit

No way would I use it anywhere near my house - it will be for the allotment only.

I don't know what to compare the smell to - I used to live on a farm and it is worse than manure. The only thing I can think to compare it to is the pig slurry we used to use on the fields - man, did that stink.

No, it's more of a bad tooth smell - you know when someone has a bad tooth or EXTREMELY poor dental hygiene and breathes on you? Imagine that to the power of 100 and you're close.

I'm going to stick to chucking the nettles on the veg beds and ignore the soak and croak instructions

I think it's marvellous stuff. and I have been known, when driven to distraction by one set of annoying neighbours on the allotment, to open the lid on the bin and then go and work at the farthest end of the plot. My bin is of course on the side next to the annoying neighbours but is usually kept tightly sealed.
