using Chard to interplant

HI all
Have planted out the sprouts and caulis, the gaps inbetween these plants- could I interplant with chard? It's almost ready to go out.

Chard gets a bit big for interplanting, at least it does when the bladdy sparrows don't rip all the leaves off.

Something quick growing like salad stuff might be better - in and out before the sprouts and caulis shade them out.

Ah... thanks RL Knew I could rely on you. I have some nice lettuces that can go in. Chard can park its roots somewhere further down the bed, I suppose.

Don't forget the radishes - about 5 weeks from sowing to harvest

My chard is refusing to germinate!

Either as rusty lady said some salad, spinach or maybe radishes or beetroot?

I have chard that was started off indoors growing in a pot, the chard in my raised beds is another story! Fingers crossed it will raise its head soon!

Yes, it does if you obey the planting distance quoted on the seed packet.

However, you can plant it closer IF you are very strict about cutting it, and you use it very frequently, to keep the plant small.

If you want a mature chard plant though, it's going to be 3ft tall and 2ft wide

i heard that chard should never be planted next to runner beans. is this true? has anyone done this and had a good or bad runner bean crop?

I haven't heard that before, but I did do it last year. Had an amazing crop from the runner beans, but the chard was rubbish if that helps.

yes thanks - it was bob flowerdew who said it in his book the no-work gardener. I will leave the chard where it is then.

If you want big chard leaves than they might be better in there own row but for little salad leaves then yes yes yes .
