  • Little purple sprouting plants left over from last year

I grew purple sprouting broccoli for the first time last year, but unfortunately all the plants were nibbled to within an inch of their lives (not sure by what), leaving only stalks remaining! So pulled them all up this spring. I did have a few reserve plants though in little pots, and these have overwintered and look healthy enough, albeit tiny (like bonsai purple sprouting!). If I put these into the ground now will they grow on normally? Or have I stunted them?!

If you've already got them then you've nothing to lose by planting them out. Unfortunately my sprouts and cabbages survived winter but hardly grew, finally improved in spring then bolted

They didn't bolt, brassicas are biennials so they just flowered.

I'd never seen a cabbage flowering until recently when my polytunnel ones decided it was time - fascinating!

I think it was pigeons that pulled the leaves off my PSB, they have net over at the moment and nothing has touched them :-)

Woodpigeons. You need to net all your brassicas: there are many critters that love to eat them, not just us

Yes, I have learnt the hard way that netting is necessary!

Have you tried eating cabbage flowers? I put some in my salad today
They have a sweet taste followed by a spicy cabbagey one. They're also very pretty
