Nobody can say if anything is 'safe'. You need to make your own assessment and take your own precautions if weather is likely to cause damage to your plants.
For clarification, it is not wimpy wind I'm talking about. We have only approximatel 25-30 days a year without wind. It's the speed and roughness this year. It's also coming from directions we don't normall get it so shelter belts and building fronts are all tending to face the wrong way."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."
PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

The wind is worse than the cooler temperatures. I am beginning to think sweetcorn should be a PT crop for me or that we simply aren't geared up to grow sweetcorn in this country. One cob off each plant seems not worth bothering with to me.Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better...Albert Einstein

The local farmers make maize silage and they shouldn't really be cutting it until it flips from starch to sugar but last year crops were in the field until the end of October and I suspect it was still a case of get it while they could. If you look at the rows on the field margins they are tŵty if they aren't protected by the hedge."A life lived in fear is a life half lived."

Mine went out yesterday with some old bottles with the tops cut off slotted over the smaller plants for protection against the wind. The larger ones I put a brick next to the base of the plant so when the wind catches it it blows against the brick - it worked for me last year whilst they established some proper roots.
