Mystery Fruit Tree ID?

I bought this tree last year at half price from the GC as they lost the tags and didnt know what it was. No fruit last year but this year there's loads forming and I was wondering if anyone could help put a possible ID on the fruit so I can get planning? The flowers were white with a yellow middle if it helps but I have no photo's of them. I originally though it was apple or pear but now seeing the fruit I'm thinking maybe plum or damson.

Doesn't look like plum to me. The stalk is too thick and on my tree tend to hang in clusters. I'm intrigued now.

I thought cherry too.

Not knowing the rootstock makes it difficult to know where to put long term. Have you any plans to plant it in the ground. If not I'd look into pruning it to keep it on the small side in that pot. But I'm sure an expert will be able to give you more detailed advice.

Perhaps a morello cherry? It's definitely in the Prunus genus (cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, almonds etc) but not a sweet cherry - the leaves are certainly not sweet cherry shaped.

To be fair the leaves and colour is probably more bland than in the photos as I auto enhanced it on the phone before posting, I hope their not cherries, I do like them occasionally but would prefer plums as I love plums and plum jam. As for pruning, I have no idea, I'll have to look into that as that's about as big as I want it to grow in the pot as I'm limited on space on the decking.

Strange thing is that in the piccies there seems to be a slit/fold in the fruit - which would indicate a plum...or is that not the case?

The fruit stalk doesn't look right for cherry - too thick and squat. Just had a look at my cherry tree and the cherries are on long thin stalks. I don't have any plums on the trees to compare.

I've just had a closer look at my peach tree and the stalks are much shorter than that- much the same as an apricot.

Actually- having thought about it.....what a fantastic excuse to go and ask at the garden centre! Take one of the piccies with you to show them. There should be an expert gardener there who can tell you. You never know- they may have the exact one there this year with a label on it!!!
...then you can wander around and treat yourself to something else...it'd be such a waste of petrol just to go and look at a tree!!

It's definitely not a peach/nectarine as the leaves are wrong, they have long pointy leaves. Same with the almond. As I said earlier it's definitely not a sweet cherry.

Sorry to be saying what it's not but it whittles down the possibilities. I'm not familiar with a morello cherry or apricot and there are various plum-like fruits popular in Japan that it may be.

The one fruit in the pictures has grown a bit more the last few days and it is definitely still keeping the ridge at present like bum, so I don't think cherry, but I guess time will tell, I just can't wait that long.
