Growing Chicco Rosso Tomatoes

Hello everyone!

I'm a complete newbie to all things gardening, but thought I would give growing some veg a go when I saw some seeds selling in my local super market.

My first attempt is at growing some 'Chicco Rosso' tomatoes. I'm a little confused because the packet has a diagram which indicates a distance of 60cm between plants. Does that mean per pot are should I divide my plant as it grows.



Like I said I am completely new to this!

I started out by planting the seeds in a small pot and left them on a window sill with lots of light. They began shooting after about 7 days. That was about 4 weeks ago, I've now re-potted into a larger pot and used a multi-purpose compost/fertilizer (for the initial pot I used some earth from the garden!).

The instruction say they do well outside under glass, but I don't have a glass house but I do have a porch with frosted glass that does get lots of light but also get quite warm. I don't know whether to leave in the porch or put it outside?

Finally, does the plant look as if it is doing ok, a couple of the leaves are a little yellow. I don't know if this is normal and if so whether to remove these.



Any other tips would be especially appreciated and welcome.

Hi Rob and welcome! Your attachments don't work sorry ( that sounds a bit personal and I don't even know you).
60cms planting distance means the distance apart when the plant if put into it final position - not while its a little seedling

It would help us if you put your location in your profile, then we have some idea of how cold/warm it is where you live

Hullo Rob Your attachments work okay for me, so here goes...

Yes, it means you have to separate each seedling into it's own space - every seed which germinates is one plant. So what you'll need to do is tip the whole lot out, gently, and gently remove/break up the compost, and gently tease out each plant by holding the stem and kinda jiggling it until the roots start to come free from the others. Start with one on the outside of the group, if that makes sense. Then, when you have a single seedling in your hand with some roots dangling off it, that needs to go into its own pot of compost - fill the pot, make a hole with your finger in the middle, nearly to the bottom of the pot, drop the seedling into the hole and form the compost around the buried stem. Then do the same for the others.

Second pic. The seedlings are looking a bit purple, which means they've been getting a bit cold. They don't really like being below 5c, so keep an eye on the weather forecast, and fetch them indoors at night if we're threatened with lower than that. Depending where you are in the country, dipping below 5c can happen until mid-June in Scotland and the northerly bit of England.

Hi Rob, welcome to the vine. You need to move on your tomatoes into individual pots about the size of a builders bucket or a supermarket flower bucket into some MPC . They should do well in your porch!

Yes, but not until they've got a bit bigger I'd say. Individually in pots about the size the whole lot are in now, and then in a couple of weeks they should be okay to go into big pots or grow bags, or whatever you're planning to use for their final home

Hello everyone!

Apologies for the slow reply but I've been very busy, however I did see the replies last week and they have really been helpful so thank you.

In answer to the question of my location I am in the London area. I took the advice and moved the plant into my porch last week when it was not so warm but it is back in the garden now that the weather is fine. Given this advice I presume the plants don't mind being moved in and outside so suit conditions then?

I've got to pick up some more pots in order to divide the seedlings, as the ones I have are only smaller than the one hey they're all growing in currently.

I wasn't aware that you need to divide the seedlings but this information is helpful because I planted some pot plants too which clearly are ready to divided up to since they're barely any room left in the pot.

UI wanted to also ask about growing onions, should I start a new thread for that?
