Could i fit more peas in here?

Hi All,

Never grown peas before, and i'm wodering whether i've been a bit generous with my spacing... could i get twice as many plants in here? How bushy do they get? They're Kelvedon Wonder and Sugar Ann.


Any thoughts appreciated.

I usually sow in a trench with the peas about 2or 3 inches apart - about 10 pea seeds to a foot of row

Hi KCN - I haven't decided how to support them yet, they seem happy enough with the twigs so far. Each station has 1-3 plants - what i'm wondering is can i double the number of stations in each row? I have more peas in the cold frame ready to go out.

I am sure there is a thread on here on planting beans/peas at 6ish to a cane. . There are vids on you tube of it being done.

I would definetly double up on the amount you have planted, peas will cling to each other as they grow up some support

The instructions on my box of peas says to plant 4-5 in a pocket, but the pockets need to be 40cm apart in all directions. The other way of planting, I believe, is in rows with peas 2" apart in a zig-zag pattern, so you kind of get a double row. I think some folk turn this into a triple row to squeeze more in. I've done rows in the past, and must admit they do get quite bushy and you do have to pick through the tangle quite carefully to find the pods... I keep meaning to spread them out a bit more, but somehow it just doesn't seem to happen . This time I've gone for pockets though, with 3-4 in each one, but probably slightly less than 40cm apart. That doesn't really answer your question though does it?? Not sure I'd go for as many as 6 so close together tbh, it'd be a real fiddle trying to pick them.

I grow Kelveton Wonder they can grow to about 2ft high.

As to spacing I plant first into 3" pots and when I plant out use the pots as a measure so they are 3" apart and about 5 to 6 inches between rows.

Damn my spacing is neither here nor there! Quandry... think I'll just bung them in and see what happens, there's no room for them anywhere else anyway! I'm going to sow some Alderman in an old recycling box too, I know it's late, but no harm in trying.

If you have any KW left they will be perfectly OK to sow now.

I will be putting my second sowing down back end of next week again in 3" pots these will then go in their final positions when the first lot are done.
