I've had a few goes at sweet potatoes, with some success. They like a long growing season and warmth. Last year, even in the greenhouse, mine were a dead loss. However you are a lot further south and we might even get a summer this year. You need deep free-draining soil to grow them in but you just plant them like an ordinary plant and the tubers form in the soil. No earthing up required. They produce lots of top growth, looks a bit like bindweed. At the end of the year leave them in the soil as long as you can (until the first frost). They need quite a lot of space. Good luck with them.
