Red meat radish ( another name is watermelon radish)

Starting from april made 4 sowings of red fleshed radish called watermelon radish or red meat, but so far no usable result. The root is not fattening at all. The first sowing has gone to seed now ( flowering) the rest are just spindly growth with useless roots.

Anyone got any experience with it?

I've never grown it myself, but I've just had a google and it's what is known as a winter radish. I think you're sowing it at the wrong time of the year - advice seems to be to sow in autumn. Where did you get your seeds?

I got seeds from ebay. And now I bought some f1 variety of red fleshed one from unwins which shows planting time from spring to summer.

Ah, they amended the sowing calendar. If you look on the second image of the packet it shows sowing times from march to August. Unwins mistake here. Just saw suttons sells them too. Their sowing times on the packet shows may to August. Hm... Strange!

I bought some of these watermelon ones a few days ago too after loving the look of them and only realised after that they need cooler temps to thrive. I googled them and it seems like they are hit and miss whether they successfully grow, I can't wait for the months to roll on to have a pop at them. They will look gorge in a salad!

Chinese friend said they are sweeter to taste as well.
The way our weather is going they should thrive instead waiting till end of summer, then they may freeze.

... the pack I'm looking at says sow July & August. They (like a lot of Chinese veg) are cool weather plants, and will go woody and/or bolt in hot weather.

hahahahaha, what am I saying? This is England, so it is cool weather during the 'summer'
