Blooming Shalotts

Can anyone please tell me why my autumn planted shallots and throwing flower spikes?

They are the same variety, Jermor, that I always grow and they have been planted and treated in the same way that I always do, but for some unknown reason this year they are all running to flower.

Couldn't agree more, Garlic with stems the size of leeks but not much on the bottom yet and leeks that never made it beyond designer size!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely the unusual weather, but I'd say lift them and sue them anyway :-)

So if they start flowering can they still be saves if you nip them off Wendy? (I don't have any flowering just curious )

From experience you may well still get a usable onion but they don't store well as the neck of the bulb is wide and the centre can be a bit hollow. I try to use them first.

Same here Wendy - although the ones in the polytunnel are looking OK so far, touch wood.

No flowers yet. Did last year, with the horrible weather. Shallots are fabulous compared to last year, in that they have survived. All clump like. Couldn't tell you if I have a single autumn planted onion, there are spring ones. Garlic. Well, I know its only just June; but it looks all right. Nearly as tall as me. Measured a random sample the other day, tip of a leaf came to my hip. A little wind burned, but it doesn't look as though it is going to go strawlike and keel over any time soon. Some stems are thin and Posh spice like, all very tall. Some of them are quite rotund.

Mine in the poly have done the same and I am so tired of waiting that they are out. My onions in there, on the other hand have done really well. My lotty ones, I've had three bolt and I pulled them immediately. Will not plant garlic in the poly again. Assumed it would do well.
