Growing Garlic and onions?

I purchased 2 garlic bulbs and a bag of onions from a local market. I've planted these as per instructions on the back of the packs but i dont really understand how they grow? Sorry i'm going to sound really simple here but do the planted onions/garlic just grow bigger or do they grow more off them?

bit late in the year for putting in onions/garlic? I put mine in last October/November.
I assume they were onion sets ...tiny tiny onions? They just grow into big onions.
And the garlic - you broke up the heads and put the individual cloves in? They grow into whole garlic heads. eventually .
I will expect to harvest mine come July/August ....no idea when you harvest stuff put in this time of year? An expert will be along soon....

Shallots are the onions that grow extra onions alongside the one you plant ( if that makes sense )

Thank you both for your replies. The onions are sets but arent shallots so that answers that one. There just starting to poke through the soil so at least there growing, i only want them for my winter stews so even if they only get to ping pong size with them being planted so late i'll be happy

Oops sounds like i've messed up on the garlic - i planted the whole rose!

You're not the first
Are they sprouting? If not, I'd dig them up and split them. You'll be very lucky if you get much from them now anyway - its a bit late

...............or early, depending on whether your cup is half full or half empty!

I only planted them about a week ago. The onions have sprouted but i havent seen anything from the garlic. Might nip outside and dig it up.

You say you followed the instructions on the packets. Did they not tell you when to plant them?

That says plant Feb to May and I would think that May is late to be honest.

the pictogram 'says' plant feb - may. I think thats weird...i always plant my garlic in oct/nov. So you are really on the late edge - were they very cheap? I would dig them up and split them up (have you got room for them all ?- there could be 15 odd cloves on each bulb)

I think Boxing say is traditionally garlic planting day.
Mine went in in October and I harvested it yesterday. Not great results but I didn't manure the soil'
I believe the onions will bolt if planted this late, not certain though?
