  • Is it too late for runners

My climbing french beans Corbra have popped there heads up, was a bit worried as it was an unknown Ebay seller. But they seem OK.

I am way behind this year, is there still time to sow runner beans ?? (Preston)

I must make more effort to get the garden in shape in Autumn and not leave it till spring.
Anyone else guilty of leaving it till the last minute ?

    Thanks
    Jimmy

You could stick some seeds in - the longer you leave it the later it gets!

You should be fine sowing runners now. Yes, guilty as charged - still clearing at the allotment to make space for stuff to go in

We're still clearing at our allotment, which we only took on at the end of April. The runner bean seeds I have say they can be sown direct as late as June so that's my job for tonight now that the canes are up. I'm also lucky that my Mum had some spare runner bean plants from the few she started in the greenhouse for my sister so I can have runner beans at 2 different stages.

You'll be fine at least until the end of June and even as late as mid-July - just make sure you give them moist, but well-drained, fertile soil to grow in - one way of ensuring this is to dig a 60cm wide by 25cm deep trench, line with newspaper and fill with compost or well-rotted manure. Top off with soil and keep well mulched.

Reckon you'll be fine. Stick 'em in anyway, there's nothing to lose.

I have some more to put in that I started off last week. One year, after loosing most of my plants due to very wet summer I started some off in July and still got a crop. So, go for it.

Mine went in last couple of weeks, just starting to show. Lots of things still going in, should just be ripe for harvesting whilst we're on holiday! Oh b..................
