  • URGENT ned advice :-) Cabbage seedling tips eaten by rabbits - will they grow?

The tips of my cabbage seedlings have been eaten by rabbits. The stem and (in most cases) the first two leaves remain.

Normally when you chop of the tip of something it splits to form two or more "branches". If this happens I won't get a "head" of cabbage?

Is it worth waiting or should I sow some more now - although it may already be too late?

    Thanks

    Allyson

Hello Allyson - Welcome to the Vine. Whereabouts are you? Depending on your location you may still be able to sow some more cabbages.

If the rabbits have eaten the growing tip of your plants then you won't get a full sized head, maybe two small ones if you are very lucky.

      Dash!

But thanks for the info - that's what I suspected might happen.

I am in North Yorkshire - I could sow some more tonight? I will try it.

Would it be a better bet in a green house in modules/seedtray? (seed bed is protected now).

      thanks

I start most of my plants in modules or small pots Allyson - that way they can get to a decent size before planting out. Gives them a bit of a chance against the slugs. I don't have rabbits at the allotment, but we do have pigeons (flying rats) who are very partial to a bit of cabbage

You might also be able to pick up some trays of cabbage plants at a local market.

If you edit your profile to add your location it will show up on your posts and saves you having to keep telling us.
