My container grown mangetout harvest: how does it compare to in ground ones?

Hi everyone,

Over the course of four days, I managed to harvest 243 grams of mangetout from five plants grown on my balcony. I am very impressed with the productivity of the plants in such a small space, which got me wondering how my harvest compares with mangetout grown in the ground. I don't have the luxury of an allotment or backyard yet but would love to hear from those that do!

My mangetout aren't cropping yet but they're in a poor position (that's my excuse anyway!)

I should think you are proud,well done,i have pea envy now,having grown them in the past on the lottie,so i would say just as good with only 5 plants,

Thank you Lottie and Bren. It's always good to get the seal of approval from those who have grown veg in the traditional way. This gives me an idea of what veggies are actually worthy of the precious little space that I have.

You probably get more crops from your balcony than I do from my jungle - just because you can watch over it so much more easily. So much of my time is spent clearing and weeding that the caring and cropping can be overlooked!
Look at Potstubsdustbins' garden. He is so well organised - he knows what works in pots and what doesn't and he has it all finetuned to create a succession of crops. So follow his example - don't look at mine

I grew mangetout in a container once, and it was quite good. Have you fed yours?

I think mangetout are a much better bet than peas if you've got limited space.

Am growing mine up a wigwam this year.

GN, awesome! Well done. Would never grow mangetout in containers myself, always stick them in the ground, but mine are only about 2 ft high and just coming into flower so it will be a couple of weeks before I get even a few pods, let alone the quantity you've got. Great work........sure you didn't get them from Sainsbury's???!!

Last year was the first time I grew them and I got about three pods. This year is looking more promising. The mangetout are a bit behind the shelling peas and the sugar snaps, though.

I did cheat the weather a little bit by starting them off in guttering in the cold frame - worked brilliantly!

Yes, I have been feeding them since they flowered with a 4-4-4 veg fertilizer with seaweed extract.

Oh this made me laugh... you are so funny! I often wonder if any vegetable showcase competitors have ever done this just to win. To rid you of any doubts, here is a picture of my container the day after the harvest . The plants are throwing out more mangetout already!
