  • Tree Chilli - Capsicum Pubescens

Hi all, new here. Firstly, just to say, what a superb forum!

Received my Tree Chilli from Suttons Seeds today, part of the much praised James Wong range. It's about 4/5 inches high, just wondering if any of you have experience of them, what size pot to put it in etc? I know that whilst it can put up with far harsher temperatures than other chillis it'll need to come indoors for the worst of it. For that reason I'm tempted not to put in a massive pot, but don't won't to restrict it too much as from what I've seen they can grow pretty quickly.

Keep most of my "normal" chillis inside or in the greenhouse (discovered a bit of an aphid infestation in there yesterday ), so growing them outside for more than a few months in the summer is new to me.

Also, can I expect it to fruit this year? Any thoughts on feeding it?!

Thanks all and nice to be here

I have these....didn't try overwintering them tho but will probably try this year. Gave them a comfrey tea feed now and again when they were fruiting and be warned the chillies are nuclear....and yes it should fruit this year.....

agreed. Although plenty has been said about the value of that range in the other thread! Just using vouchers!

Thanks for the advice, look forward to getting them going now.

I generally aim to have chilli plants sown the same year in 5 litre pots by mid summer. They stay in those pots over the winter. The following year, in early spring, I transfer to 15 litre pots. I find this pot size more than adequate for rest of the year, and subsequent seasons too, but the compost / growing media would still need replacing annually. The top growth can be fairly rapid given the right conditions, but the roots don't go down that far, so too deep a container is just an inconvenience. Although I only ever grow chillies under glass, so if you're intending to grow this plant outdoors, a slightly bigger container would help with stability, and you'll definitely need to support the plant as it grows.

A 15 litre pot is also not too heavy for the average person to move about. Overwinter the plant under cover somewhere that won't freeze. Your plant will be hardier than most, but it'll still benefit from frost protection. And you definitely ought to feed your plant during the growing season for best results; once a week is the usual advice.
