  • Plant ID help

Hi, this is growing on a plot I took over in Jan, from a Portuguese family. When it first came up I wasn't sure if it was a weed or some sort of brassica. It now has flower buds. Any idea what it is and if I can move to a better position. Thanks.

It's a kind of poppy. I have had them volunteering in my garden for the past 15 years. I don't mind because I love poppies of all kinds.

Ah I thought it was, but the leaves looked different to the pictures I was checking it against. Cheers guys- very on the ball!

It's the flower heads that give it away. I've a couple different types of poppies, and the leaves are a bit different in them! The question mark and full stops were just to get around the 10 char limit in my post btw.

Ah okay, yeah it was the seed head that made me think it was. Until then I thought it was likely ediable. They're in a bed where I'm growing some fruit canes, so I'll probably try and move them. I've also had some other random plants come up, I think some are sunflowers and potatoes everywhere. Thats all some people grow!

Opium poppy - beautiful flowers. They have a tap root so won't move successfully at that size.

I guess if I'm not going to be able to move the fruit canes to my new house (see my thread in the weeds section) I may as well leave them. I pulled a lot out anyway, but was wondering what they were.

See if you like the flowers, if so, collect the seed heads after they've flowered. They'll be hundreds of seeds in each head

They are annuals by the way. Grow from seed, flower and die in one year.

Ok, think a lot of seeds are leftover from the old person and digging brought them to the top.
