  • Rhubarb issues!

Hello, I am having some rhubarb issues, First of all I bought two split crowns waaay back in January and planted them on my allotment (south of england, clay soil, manure dug in in november)

Well basically one rhubarb grew perfectly well until the leaves got to about 3cm square, then they start to go yellow and die off. The other crown i dug up in may after doing nothing and it just crumbled into pieces.

I bought a large healthy looking rhubarb to replace it, and it started doing the same thing, new leaves come fine but never grow very large at all, my neighbours all grow it easily and can't understand my problem!

I water about twice a week, it's in a sunny position. I have noticed ants all round the stalk, and a few cuts on the stalk like they have eaten it, but not read much about ants doing a lot of damage before, not to the stalks anyway!

Does anyone have any ideas at all? Any help appreciated!

    Here's a few photos

Where did you get the manure from? And was it well rotted?

I also think you may be watering too much.

I got it from a friend who keeps horses, the pile was massive i got it all from the bottom hopefully very old well over four years!

Will try the soil conditioner and reduce the watering, thanks for advice!

I think what is being hinted at is that the manure could have been contaminated with aminopyralid weedkiller?

Google the name and you'll see what I mean.

Just googled, nasty stuff! I'm hoping I may have got lucky as I have raspberries and tomatoes growing in beds from the same manure and touch wood growing fine! As is everything else.

Glad I asked now, new to gardening and didn't realise that you could get weedkiller brought in this way! Teach me for being nieve! Thanks once again.
