  • aphids?

    hi
I have holes in my bean plants, aubergine plants, broccoli , cabbage plants. I use the nemaslug stuff and there are no slug trails so I know it is not that. could it be aphids or beetles? I have been washing plants off with water daily and someone suggest Vicks vapourub and I have put this in pots and bamboo sticks in hope that will rid them anything else I should be doing?

Aphids don't eat leaves, they just suck the sap.

Snails eat leaves and don't always leave trails, but holes in leaves sounds more like caterpillar damage. Have a close look at your plants.

If your organic start squishing if not use a spray.

        Have you netted your plants?

Your PSB and cauli will grow higher than 2 ft. Where the leaves touch the netting the flutterbyes will still be able to lay their eggs.

Have a close look in the morning you may also find some eggs groups/bunches of usually tiny yellow beads.

            Squish these to.

Nemaslug won't kill everything, and it won't work at all if it's applied on cold soil. "holes" definitely is the MO of slugs & snails (they don't always leave a trail, either).

As said, cabbage white caterpillars will turn your brassicas to lace, so these need to be netted at all times with fine mesh, AND inspected at least weekly because some will get through.

Is the netting over the top of the plants, or just round the sides?

Have just watched the end of Gardening A-Z this morning where it was R. And the man at Ryton Organic garden said don't worry about aphids on your roses...

I don't bother rubbing the aphids off my rosebuds any more, not since I saw the Sparrow Family balancing on the fence trying to eat them all up
