Onions. Should I give up?

I put some red onion sets in earlier in the year but they dont look like they have grown much. Lots of top growth and they all keep trying to flower!
I really dont have much space in my veggie beds and hate the thought of wasting it if I would be better of planting something else. What do you think??
(so far Ive been useless at growing all alliums, except chives.).

Don't give up! Why not try planting them in pots next year if you are stuck for space?

Mine are mostly still skinny with lots leaves, remember we are a few weeks behind so there may still be time for them to beef up.

I have taken to growing Long Red Florence where I can - you get bullet shaped red bulbs and you can put more in each space..plus you can dot them round and about anywhere you want...

Red onions seems more difficult the white ones.
This year looks like the first one that may be reasonably successful with whit ones for me, think the last 2 years were a waste of time. Last years were late and I think I basically just planted them and didn't dig anything in. This year the area had a couple of bags of manure added prior.

Weather will not have helped, think mine went in a little early and got snowed on and froze but all have come through. Looking good but haven't looked closely yet.

Onions are of short, medium and long day varieties and I have no idea which red onions fall into. If yours went in late and are the wrong type then they will not bulk up too well. They are a bit more technical then put in ground and watch them grow.

Best is simply to leave them and wait until Sept, that tends to be harvest time and that is still a good couple of months away.

I never have much luck with red onion sets - I've given up on them now. Try a different colour next year

I have 2 potato onions - so its going to take several years to build up enough of them to be able to eat one Just hope I like them when the time comes

I usually do well with Red Baron in pots but they are definitely slow this year.
