  • ID this squash anyone???

I've just been given some squash seeds ( no harm in asking is there???)but far more than I need.
The problem is that I don't know the type of squash they came from. ( no photo-sorry)
The squash was bright orange and like a rounded rugby ball. It has a very nutty flavour and will roast without turning to slush.
I tasted it with some of the skin grated into rhubarb jam and it had a flavour of chestnuts.
    Can anyone ID it??
Also if anyone wants a few seeds to try- PM me.

    Butternut Squash?

Pale orange rind, smooth, deep orange flesh, tends to be fat at one end then thinning to an obvious neck. The seeds are in the fat end. Does this sound right?

It is a winter squash and needs a long hot summer to ripen fully in the UK.

Nope- not butternut squash....this is a strong, deep orange skin and about the same size as a honeydew melon.
Will look into Squash63's avatar- thanks

Hmmm- that could well be it LJ- the Red Kuri Squash aka Japanese squash!!
The guy I got the seeds off had already grated and cut off some of the skin, so maybe that's why I didn't see the sticky-out bit.
If anyone wants to try some seeds- let me know!
( he said you need to grow them away from other varieties as the skin will get green stripes if it cross pollinates)

I grew baby bear last year - fitted that description to a T. However, many of the little pumpkins are like this.
