The lettuce seedlings pricked out three weeks ago are still the same size, but the spares which were just bunged in the ground in two clumps are about ready to start taking leaves.

I think the quality of compost has suffered badly as the peat reduction programme continues.there does not seem to be any alternative thats as good yet and some of the composts offered are just plain rubbish.

Yeh- I've found that too- espesh over here.
Also- the good ones seem to be mostly peat.

We've bought ours from a plant nursery for the past couple of years-(twice the price, but it's what they use) and each time they've said to mix it with soil from the garden 50/50

Interestingly , the cabbage seedlings I bought and left in their pots for 10 days have faired much worse than the ones we shoved in the ground in one big clump...and all have been well watered.
