I water very little outdoors and havent ever watered onions once they are in a bed with no problems, admittedly this is partly due to the fact I cant get to my allotment every day.
If you are growing in tubs then you may have to consider some watering.

Same here regarding onions - I rarely weed them either (despite what the manuals say)
.......because you're thinking of putting the kettle on and making a pot of tea perhaps, you old weirdo. (Veggie Chicken - 25/01/18)
I do water my onion bed, not every day, but a couple of times a week in dry weather, as if they become too dry and stressed the onion will run to seed. This happens quite quickly on my clay soil, if not watched like a hawk.
I tend to water the onions that I have in tubs a couple of times a week, not too much water. The ones I have in the big raised beds I water maybe once a week, again not too much water.
water my onions thoroughly once a week, and keep them weeded and mulched with straw,it definitely improves the crop, especially keeping the weed competition down
don't be afraid to innovate and try new things
