Welcome to the vine kristy, you may be a tad late with Swede but if you have the seeds you could always sow a few & see how they do. Here is a cracking little link that you may wish to save in your favourites.

A bit late for Swedes. You could grow some kohl rabi instead? Grows quicker and tastes nicer (I think).

I tend to sow my swedes direct as I don't find any advantage in module sowing (enough other things that I have to to get a crop ). The main reason I grow them is for a winter crop, if it's just the taste you're after then you would probably still get a crop of turnips as they taste pretty much the same but are quicker growing (and sadly tender). I don't think kohl rabi is quite the same but again quick growing and tender.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Maybe getting a bit late but I'm going to sow some more swede next week in modules, or that's the plan. Can't direct sow as I'm waiting for a bit of space for them. Earlier sowings have done really well so far, it look like they will be hoooge Swedes are quite easy and seem to just get on and grow although slugs gave them a bit of a bashing earlier on. Variety I'm planning on sowing is new to me, Invitation and according to the packet can be sown in July Swede Invitation - Vegetable Seeds from Mr Fothergills Seeds and Plants

Folks, does anyone know of a swede that doesn't taste like turnip? I sowed Friese Gele this year and although it's cropped well, I can't bear the taste. This all goes back to a bumper crops of Milan Purple Top turnips three years ago. I ate a lot and became totally averse to them!

I'm looking for a swede that tastes, well, more swede-y.

The taste will alter with the soil it's grown on - I can grow it here - but the same variety had a much stronger taste on my previous patch.

To me swede and turnips always taste pretty much the same but not a problem as I like the taste

Thanks, Thelma and Alison. I'm just trying one chopped up with the roasties and basted in chicken juice so we'll see if that makes it any more palatable.
