  • Garden Planning Help Please

Hello all, first post from a new member wanting some advice on how best to plan our fruit and veg garden.

We have a fairly long but narrow garden, currently split into 4 areas including 2 lawns and a pond, we also have a 6 year old child and a rowdy dog but have decided we want to start growing our own.

I have uploaded a video of our garden taken earlier today onto youtube, so people can see the layout. We would be interested in growing everyday things such as:

    Carrots
    Spuds
    Beetroot
    Lettuce
    Strawberries
    Blackberries
    Rasberries

We currently have a few pots growing herbs and a failing strawberry plant. Does anybody have any advise as to how we could plan the garden?

We would ideally want to use the bottom part of the garden (furthest away from the house) for growing and keep the area at the bottom of the steps as it is (but could use the deck area for pots), and need to take into account the kids playing and the dog when planning things.

Does anybody have any advise for us please?

The video can be found here:

    thanks in advance

Hi Musky and welcome I've looked at your video - do you mean veg in the area with the children's toys/playhouse (can't remember off hand what there was)!
How shady is it? Which way does the sun travel around the garden?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes, we are ideally looking at keeping the fruit and veg at the end of the garden where the childrens play hosue is, this area gets the sun most of the day. The deck by the pond is in the sun most of the day but the area closer to the house (furthest away from the play house). There is shade behind the shed and behind the rows of tree's, but generally both sides of this part of the garden are in the sun most of the day.

We are thinking of maybe having fruit bushes down either side by the fence and digging out a border at one or both sides for planting veg.

We are also thinking of replacing the childrens play house with a chicken coup in a could of years if things go well, but one thing at a time!
