Problem Strawberries

Now I have never grown these before so be kind .

The plants are 2 years old get plenty of water and get plenty of sun. They are in a tub.

Thing is there are loads of flowers but what fruit there is is very small and any that try to ripen do so from the stalk end, ( not the pointy end ) Very technical that bit.

They seem to ripen a little then just go brown and fall off.

Is this the norm for young plants or am I doing something very wrong.

Strawberries in their second year are not classed as young plants, if fact most people get rid after their third year.

You say you grow in a tub can I ask what you feed them with?

Hi Potty,

They are in Miracle Grow Compost.

Dave even Miracle Grow compost runs out of nutrients after about 8 weeks, after that you would have to feed. In my containers I use Miracle Grow spray at the start of the season for green growth and then change to tomorite when the fruit shows to swell said fruit.

Hi again,

They started getting Tomato feed when I started feeding the Toms in the greenhouse, so it is not a lack of feed . Strange.

There was a label with them 2 years ago but now, well where has that gone.

The plants look a good shade of green and generally healthy.

My only comment would be that they do look over crowded.

Is it a trick of the light or are the flowers pink? Most strawberry flowers are white. Can you remember where you bought them as this would narrow down the variety. I'm asking because many of the pink flowered strawbs seem to be grown as ornamentals rather than edibles.

I have no idea what the variety is called, but they have pink flowers and the fruits are very knobbly. I have these plants in hanging baskets and, apparently, they are supposed to be like that. Mine came from Morrisons originally, although I'm now onto my second lot of runners now.

Yes the flowers are Pink.

They were bought from a local Farm Shop.

I think it will have to be a recognised eating variety for next year and hope I get some.

If you get any runners this year I would grow on a few ready for new plants next year.

Strawberries tend to fade after their third year.

Assuming those are 4" deck boards in the background that pot is way too small for what looks like several plants. Is/are the crown/s covered? that can cause the problem you're having.
