Tomato Tigerella - The Diggers Club


I got a 'kit' to grow these from B&M, basally the seeds a bit of compost and a small seed tray, I just say it in passing and though I would give it a go even though I had already started my tomato seeds.


I must say I am impressed, they were started later than my other plants but already seem to have more fruit on them and seem to be doing well.

Also they then to grow more upright than bushy (the are indeterminate) but seem more indeterminate than most.

Also they have stripy fruit hence the name Tigerella

I am really impressed with them so far and will be growing more of them if all goes well.

The best yielding tomato we have ever grown, producing enormous crops of delicious red-yellow striped tomatoes with exceptional flavour. Fruits in 10 weeks from transplant and continues to yield for months, up to 20kg of fruit per plant!

Tomato 'Tigerella' Seeds

Tomato "Tigerella" is a standard, indeterminate variety, an English heirloom variety that is highly productive and extremely attractive. It has a unique, rich, tangy flavour and the stripes give it outstanding eye appeal.

An early variety, Tigerella crops can be harvested up to three weeks earlier than Moneymaker, the bountiful trusses on this award winning tomato ensure large crops. When mature they are the size of a billiard ball. They produce a 110 to 170 grams (4 to 6 oz.) fruit with a rich, tangy flavour.
Completely greenback free, they mature in 85 to 100 days. One of the large seed houses described Tigerella as “The finest supermarket size tomato we’ve grown”.

They are also very decorative, the light green and dark green striped ripened fruit
is very easy on the eye, it make them easy to spot too

I'm growing these too. Brother in law bought me a kit of "funky veg" as a joke, don't think he expected the to grow so well. As well as these toms it included yellow courgettes, rainbow chard, purple haze carrots and purple brussels. Only one of the brussels looks purplish, but the rest of the veg are producing well.

Plenty of fruit on the tigerella, just waiting for them to ripen to compare to the other 6 varieties I'm growing.

OH really? maybe, one reviews say "exceptional flavour" so I guess I will just have to wait and see.

I guess you would expect some trade off between yield and flavour though, none of my big tomatoes came to much last year (started a little late and weather not too good (wet)).

My Cherry tomatoes were great for taste, like plumbs.

They certainty look better than my boring plane green ones.

Yes same here, waiting for them to ripen, think I have a long wait yet for the big toms but the cherry ones will start ripening in about 3 weeks hopefully.

I got some freebie seeds of these, but I won't grow them again, I agree they lack flavour.

Well I will have to wait and see what mine are like, but they will struggle to have less
flavour than some of the supermarket tomatoes, especially the standard 6 pack from sainsburys
which are uniquely flavourless, indeed their economy tomatoes have miles more flavour
indeed they are often delicious!! (although there is some variation in taste/quality).


Indeed if they really are that flavourless I expect Sainsburys will be stocking them soon

I grow a HSL variety called Darby Striped which give a bit of an unsurprisingly striped effect and find that they have far more taste and are exceptionally prolific although I do realise that taste is subjective and it also depends on your soil / watering etc etc. Good luck with them

I have grown tigerella for a few years and they are one of our favourites. We pick them when they are still reasonably orange and we find them firm, juicy and with a lovely flavour. My children would be very upset if we didn't grow them. Oh and yes, they do produce a great amount.

FYI Gemski, the rainbow chard is brilliant. Tried growing spinach a couple of years back and it was hopeless, but the chard is "cut and come again" by the looks of it, and the real bonus is neither pigeons nor slugs seem to have a liking for it so it's all mine!!!

I really like chard (rainbow or otherwise) for just the reasons you state, Vince. Also it grows on into and even all through the Winter. Even if it bolts, I just take the flower stem out and it keeps coming. (It can get a bit tough.) It is a great poly tunnel plant, it can be planted really tight and harvested as caca and is so tender. Anyway, this is almost "tangenting" so I'll stop!

Woo hoo!! I had actually just not long put some rainbow chard and spinach beer... I managed ok with spinach but left it overwinter and it bolted so I pulled it an and needed something for the gap. Hopefully now it's stopped raining *quite* so much it might get moving 😁
