I live in Manchester- help we're drowning!
Although we do have enough rain to last several lifetimes up here I quite fancy a water butt & am trying to find a space for one of the slimline ones but they do all seem very expensive ( the Two Wests one does look O.K.though)
Into every life a little rain must fall.

Our two plots have two 1000 litre IBC`s on each. All are sat on 3 pallets (that is their footprint) and have taps attached. They are piped into the shed guttering on one plot and somehow will be to the polytunnel on the other.

They are a bit big for home use unless you have a big garden but are ideal on the plot. All four are full and the excess is now filling up half a dozen linked barrels. Sorted, with the added bonus that here in the Midlands there is no hose pipe ban. YET!

You could always construct your own, in the past I have used alsorts from wheelie bins to air ducts. If it can hold water, it can be a storage vessel.
              Best wishes

Hi Mel and Sue (not to be confused with tv personalities)

Check on ebay, they have one type advertised for about £35 plus £6 postage, I just put 'water butt' into their search facility in Home and Garden. 100ltr

Take a look on manchester city councils website under environmental services a-z they give the phone no for straight recycling who they are supposed to have a discount deal with for water butts

If you are with Thames water you can get a 190 litre water butt for £19.95, a stand to raise it off the ground (and let you get your watering can under the tap) for £10 and a diverter for your gutter's down pipe for £6 from the following link.

                      http://www.getcomposting.com/thames/index2.htm

If you are not with Thames water then you could still give it a go because when I ordered I did not get asked for proof...

Thats a fantastic link Urban-Gardener, I've just ordered too, and a composter. I checked on Thames Water website and you can use a short hose pipe to fill buckets/water cans which will makes things a bit easier.

Many thanks for that info. Will order ASAP.
Very reasonable price. Just hope it rains enough to fill the butt!!

I can't believe how cheap that composter is - makes me mad when I think how much I paid for mine through Bromley council. The water butt looks like a good deal so will probably order it when I get paid.

Thanks urban-gardener. Like you said, let's just hope it rains although we've had a fair bit this week.
