Funnily enough, we were having a discussion at the Hill tonight about the fact that all through the Spring (wot Spring?) we were confidently saying 'yes, isn't it dreadful, we are at least 4 wks behind last year!'
Yet, for us here in the Midlands at least, given a fortnight of heatwave, then some serious thundery showers, we are EXACTLY where we'd expect to be in the week before the Annual Show.
I have a couple growing now at long last, still some way to go before they area ready to pick.
I have had plenty of cucumbers though.
I'm not sure that courgettes 'ripen' esbo - I say that they are ready to pick at 6" with flowers still attached - they will taste sublime!
If you let them grow further, they will have the same taste overall, BUT in a greater volume. People say that courgettes are tasteless only because they have let those cute baby courgettes grow too big.

Well I have some about 4-5 inches long I think (wish I had some recent photos of them, they look a bit thin really, they need more time before they are ready to eat, a week or two maybe).

I swear those cute little baby courgettes wait until I turn away for 5 minutes and morph into great, whacking marrows! ; )
