Must-have tools for veg gardening

Hi Everyone,

All gardeners have a trusty tool, one that is never far from reach and has seen them through many growing seasons. So what is your must-have?

I think it would be hard to choose but this year I bought some veg inexpensive "dead heading" clippers. They are very small and simply made but I have used them so much for all my dead heading needs as well as using them to pick my toms, cucumbers and mongetout. I would definitely recommend them

I would certainly never go on the garden without my scissors. So handy for cutting twine, cutting compost bags open, cutting salad, cutting slugs in half .....

Like all the others I couldn't or wouldn't bother gardening without all of those tools. Each one has its particular use.

I bought an adaze after reading rave reviews on here and watching a few video clips. It was great last year for breaking up the ground on my new plot. I also use it for potato trenches and earthing up, allsorts really. Mine is the lightest one, double sided with a blade and two prongs on the other. Got quite good at picking out couch grass with the prongs last year!

In my view, the basic tool set for growing veg is a spade, fork, rake and hoe but the most important of the four is my hoe. I use it even if the ground doesn't look as though it needs any action and the end result is that I have very little tedious hand weeding to do. I have several hoes but my favourite has a 6" blade, is made of old steel, keeps a good edge and is worth its weight in gold

Growing in containers I have no use for a spade, hoe, large fork, etc.

So for me its a trowel, a hand fork, pair of scissors, a desert spoon and a bent dinner fork.......honest.

The most used tool on my plot would have to be my trusty fork. A sharp knife would be a very close 2nd though

For the last few years, my favourite tool has to be my long handled bulb planter, it's perfect for planting tatties & as yet have no reason to change my mind, just ask my glass back...........

I've voted "fork" - by which I mean my latest purchase from the local car boot sale. The size of a hand fork, but on a long handle. Perfect for keeping the top two inches of soil light so that new weeds can't get established. �2 well spent!

My favourite is a "Cultiweeder" It has 3 prongs for breaking up the soil, but flip it over and its a hoe. I also use it on its side to cut a seed drill. Although I'm short, I fit it on a long handle to give me a longer reach without stepping on the beds. In theory, you can add other tools to the handle, but I've stuck with this one - although I do have a handversion of the Cultiweeder for close work.
