Conflicting sowing dates!!

Sow according to the instructions on the seed packet - that's what we tell people and we should be able to rely on the retailers for sound advice.......but.....
I have some packets of Swiss Chard - Bright Lights from different suppliers and they're all different sowing dates:-
Kings - March - May
Suttons - April - June
Mr Fothergill - April - July
T&M - March - August (Swiss Chard Five Colour Silverbeet)

Who is right? Who should we trust?
Any more examples?

Does this help VC? From the growing guides on this site:

"There are two windows for sowing chard. A spring sowing in April will ensure a harvest of leaves through the summer and autumn, while sowings made in late summer (up to the middle of August) will complete the cropping cycle, rewarding you with leaves from a few months on right through to the following spring."

You could sow chard pretty much any month I reckon, except November.

TBH I don't pay much attention to sowing dates on packets but it worries that me that there is such variance between the seed retailers. Its could be so confusing for a newbie

Doing exactly that William!

Sowed an 8ft row of bright lights in April, which is still going strong - the odd plant bolts, but the leaves still taste perfectly ok.

Gonna sow some more in modules mid-Aug to go in the polytunnel for winter use.

I think the most notable thing is how well the people here know you...

No-one batted an eyelid at you having 4 packs of Swiss Chard seeds!

Vikki, I don't want you to think that I have ONLY 4 packets because I had duplicates of the Kings & Mr F and 2 packets of Red Vulcan and a couple of packets of White - plus a big bag of seeds I saved last year
I'm sure it'll make good ground cover

Yes, I do think it's a shame but maybe they would only start with one packet of seed! I use my growing calendars (garden/polytunnel) but I know not everyone has those.

I think it shows that, as in most things I have found since I started growing veg, there isnt one definite answer and that you will get different opinions depending on who you ask. I dont think that any will necessarily wrong it is just their opinion on when best to plant their particular seed to get optimum results. But with so many variables involved I think you can only take it as a guide.
