they were rubbery'ish? with sort of like black dirt/sand in them but they wernt like a nutshell full on the inside they were like a bell pepper has grown inside a bell pepper with a fine layer of sand or dirt between the two? i pulled them off, they were like deformed corn maybe when i went around checking my corn for ripeness i peeled some of the leaf back and had a look and squeezed a kernel where i thought they might be ready and maybe i have just disturbed the latest pollinated silks??????? but i do have another freaky thing that is quite cool, i have a few kernels growing on some male flower heads??????????

Try a google of corn common smut or corn head smut.

Symptoms sound similar galls with black spores inside.

New one on me to,feel further down the cob,to see if its developing,as we all know, they usually develop bottom to top,but that one looks like it's totherway round, very odd indeedy,do the growths look like corn cernals, could you remove 1,and dissect it to see whats inside.......now that would go well in the funny veg compotition,

I believe it is a corn fungus. I have seen this before.

                    Description of Wikipedia:

"Corn smut (Ustilago maydis) is a pathogenic plant fungus that causes smut disease on maize and teosinte (Euchlena mexicana). The fungus forms galls on all above-ground parts of corn species, and is known in Mexico as huitlacoche; it is eaten, usually as a filling, in quesadillas and other tortilla-based foods, and soups."
