Used Growbags

Hello all, My first post on this forum.

I'm quite new to vegetable gardening but have built 6 raised beds at the end of my garden and I've had reasonable success in my first year.

When my beds are free of produce I need to raise the soil level in each bed by a couple of inches or so and improve the structure. Is it OK to dig in my grow bags that I'm currently using for tomatoes in my green house to help achieve this?

I have a friend who keeps horses so have access to this mature manure to help improve and raise the soil level but didn't want to waste the grow bags if they were of any use.

I shall be asking more "silly" questions as time goes by

I would, and do. The manure will make up any deficiency in the grow bags,

Hello and welcome.

I stick used compost from pots (no grow bags) on the soil just as an improver for me ghastly clay.

Welcome to the Vine Keith, and it's not a silly question. If you don't ask you don't learn.

Used compost is fine to add to beds.

Could you add your location (nearest town) to your profile please? Then it will show on your posts and helps when giving advice on growing conditions as climate varies so much even within the UK.

Just one word of warning check where the horses that are producing the manure have been grazing.

Find out if any herbicide's have been used and if in doubt do a grow test before adding to your beds.

Throw the grow bags in, add manure, should do well, may want some grit. It is a fairly good and inexpensive way of building up a raised bed, just takes time - depending on the number of grow bags you get through.

Potstubsdustbins, The horses are free range and are running around, and eating, from lovely green fields/paddocks. However, the horse poo is mixed with straw and wood chippings does that make any difference?

Kirk, thanks, that's what I've done so far doing so it sounds as if I'm on the right road.

Keith, the straw and wood chippings should be OK. But some people use a herbicide on their fields to get rid of weeds. This can and does pass through into the horse poo and will then kill most anything that's planted in it.

Darned if I can remember the name but I am sure someone will be along to fill out the detail.
