Butternuts do best undercover for me. So maybe a fleece over cloche hoops if you don't have greenhouse/polytunnel space? That should keep them growing as the nights get cooler. Also, if you have fruit formed but not growing quickly enough, try giving them a good soak with tomato feed.

Must admit, my butternut is looking good so far, but fruits are only tiny for this late on... They're in the polytunnel, and I've just had to cut the plant back quite brutally 'cos it was taking over a bit... It seems to have lots of small fruits, so I cut off lots of stems with flowers on, and even some small fruits, to stop further growth, and felt really guilty, kept apologising to the plant as I went, explaining it was so she could concentrate on finishing off the others.. hope she doesn't hold it against me! I've only ever managed one small butternut from a plant before so I'm getting quite excited at the moment! If only summer would last another 3 months, I could probably start to gloat!

For quality and quantity you can beat a nice yellow courgette.
Loads of fruit and grows out doors.
Some times you get a marrow if you don't keep your eyes open.
Need to do some successional sowing as I find they often burn out.
