  • Can I put raised beds on paving?

I am brand new to GYO and am hoping to put some raised beds in our small (8m by 5m) back garden, which is mostly paved. There is already a small border along the south facing fence, but it's only around 30-40 cm wide. I started digging up the old plants today (mostly weeds and mint) and the soil seems pretty good, but I'm not sure how deep it is and thought raised beds might be a good idea.

I want to find someone to get rid of some of the paving, but I don't know how much it will cost and whether we can afford to do it now. I looked online for how to do it myself but they're not paving slabs, it is like crazy paving and seems to be set in concrete - think it might need a pickaxe or sledgehammer.

So, if we can't remove any paving for the moment, is it possible to sit raised beds partly on the small border we do have and partly on the paving? I was thinking of getting deep raised beds, I've seen some that measure 30cm x 100cm x 100cm, and some others that are the same height and width but twice as long.

    Thanks for any advice

You will be glad to know the short answer is yes. I have two raised beds sat on concrete both 12"/300mm deep and successfully grow calabrese and spring cabbage in them.

I too have a couple of raised beds in a similar situation and I have grown cabbage, spring greens, lettuce and turnip in them so far with great success - barring those blasted butterflies!

Forgot to mention do not under any circumstances seal the bed to the concrete, leave the gap to provide drainage.
