I picked up a couple of packs of Ariane F1 asparagus seeds in the 50p a pack scramble yesterday. I was intrigued as the pack says you can take a light harvest the first year!
When I got back home I did a bit of googling and the interwebz say the plants only last 5-7 years.
I planted out about 30 crowns of asparagus last year and they cost a fortune but following the wet weather we had last year only about 7 have come back up this year.
This has left me with massive gaps in my asparagus bed and my wallet!
I've got some more traditional asparagus seed which I was going to try and use to fill in the gaps but I'm now considering setting aside part of the bed to try out these shorter lived plants in the hope I can get some spears a bit earlier!
My thinking is I can replace them when they're exhausted with more of the traditional varieties grown from seed... this may become the most elaborate successional sowing I've ever done!
