Evening all,

I have a new patch of soil out my back about 4 m x 1 m, nothing has ever been grown in it. I would like to plant my garlic in it next month, so my question is ..... Do I need to add compost/ manure to it now ?

Did the new soil develop from compost? If so, I think I'd chance using it as it is (but then I haven't got good results from garlic for the last several years). I set garlic a week ago in a fairly big bin which hasn't had anything grown in it for a couple of years. It spent last winter with layers of soft green weeds on top, some brown material from old papers and covered with weedblock. I'm hoping that will ensure some good quality soil for the garlic.

You could use the old belt and braces idea of adding more good quality compost.

I reckon wiser heads than mine will be along with maybe better advice.

garlic will grow well in just about any soil i have found,so just give it a try,whats to lose,good luck and enjoy the uncertainty..

I must admit that when I saw your title I half expected to see jack warner of "Dixon of dock green" fame on the message, it just shows what an ooooooooollllllllllddddddddd timer I am now, to be able to think back to the old black and white days, just off to do me Horlicks and hot water bottle..
