  • Male flower squash

I've got four squash plants that have got to decent sizes, two in big pots two in the ground. All four are only producing male flowers though! I had the same issue last year, what am I doing wrong? is it my soil? Really frustrating to put effort into getting the plants this far for no reward.

When did you plant them out?

My marrow has only had one female flower this year. I've been searching for an answer and so far the best explanation I've come up with is from the University of Florida, where it states:

"The ratio of males to females varies with the type of squash. "

Something to compare with other growers maybe, and also:

"Gardeners frequently note that their squash blooms profusely, yet fruit does not develop as they expect. The plants may produce only male flowers or only female flowers. Flower sex is influenced by temperature, seasonal day length, plant maturity and hormones."

Unfortunately it doesn't go on to specify what conditions are required to produce female flowers

Some of my courgettes/squashes have done nothing this year - just a few male flowers. Neither of the Pattypans have had a single fruit.

I've got 4 different squashes as well as the marrow. They have all had just one small squash each. I think they need HRT...

They may still produce some fruit, mine have been v slow, with lots male flowers, but all of a sudden some females, have appeared and they do grow in a few days.

Mine did v well last year, but this year some plants have not produced anything! V strange! Green Button Squash!
