at what point do i give in to green toms?

At what point should i give up waiting for my toms to turn red? Should i start to pick my green toms for green tom chutney or wait a bit longer?

We have picked all of ours now. Some are in a shoe box, some in the airing cupboard and a big bag of them waiting their turn in the ripening process . I do expect I might have to make chutney with some, I don't mind

I'd leave them a bit longer so long as they look blight free and are frost free.
Might be worth starting a few ripening indoors though...it depends on how many you have!!!

Mine are still outside as the coming week looks set fair. I suspect however by next weekend they will be in!

Last year and the year before I was still picking them red in November. So, I'll be leaving my indoor ones for a fair while yet.

Frost will ruin then all in one night, so beware of that, otherwise you can leave them a while yet, my outdoor toms are just starting to turn and we are promised a good week ahead for weather. Did you know that green tomatoes can be made into other things beside chutney? I watched a you tube vid last night by a man named bacosoda who made green tomatoe soup. There is a fairly recent thread on here with lots of advice on ripening toms.

I'm a bit further north than you and our first frost is generally the middle of October so I'd leave them a few weeks but keep an eye on the weather forecast.....I'm picking some of mine as they are on the turn then finishing them off on window ledge.

One way of getting toms to ripen is to put a banana at the side of them apparently the gas given of the banana helps the toms to turn red!!!I was a bit dubious when I first heard this but it really works

Hmmm i might pick some, if its not the snails its the caterpillas and now playing the weather game!! I'll try and rippen some and leave some out. Thanks guys

My outdoor toms are still continuing to ripen and are still being picked and eaten within a few minutes. I'm in the Nottingham area

I think I might be picking a load of mine soon - wandering round the garden today I noticed some ominous black spots on some of the leaves of my Sungold. I cut off the affected leaves but past experience of blight tells me that I can expect the plants to die off pretty quickly Its warm, and a foggy morning forecast tomorrow certainly won't help.

I can recommend green tomato marmalade!

Some of my indoor beefsteak ones are just starting to ripen and plants are looking well, just as everyone else on the allotments is clearing their greenhouse. I like beefsteaks that are medium rare and just starting to turn. They are more soild and have more taste then methinks.
There's something to be said for sowing some early and some late for a succession.

You could also take plant from the ground and hang it upside down with green toms. This will help to speed up ripening.
