  • DIY TomTato

Just spotted a tomato/potato plant called tomtato on the Beeb.
    See
BBC News - 'TomTato' tomato and potato plant unveiled in UK

    It's seems to be grafted.

A quick check on T&M site seems to indicate it costs £14.99.

I wonder, could you graft your own.

    Anyone any experience in this.

I'd heard of it being done before T&M took it mainstream.. no idea on what the most compatible types are mind..

So when you graft your tomato top onto your potato bottom you will have two bits left.
So you could graft the potato top onto the tomato bottom.
      Any point ?
      Apart from poisoning yourself !

You do whats called an angled 'splice' i.e. joining the plants together whilst still growing on their own roots. Only when the splice has taken (cut half way through each stem, one angled up and one angled down)do you cut off the tomato root end off.
I did one many years ago and bound the splice with raffia. Any variety will do of either spud or tom but the modern potatoe leafed varieties of tomato would probably be the best option.

I only did it for a bit of daftness with plants I had spare. From what I remember it wasn't worth the faff I got potatoes and tomatoes but the spuds were very small.

              Thanks.
Don't think I will be buying one.
And I will stick to separate toms and spuds.

Probably better growing a tom plant and a spud plant till they are both fully grown.
And then grafting them with some strong tape.
And then showing people how good the spuds/toms are !

Make sure you use green tape with a hidden cane up the centre for strength!

Well he does seem to have a very good grip at the join point. Possibly just holding two halves together without need of tape!
