I have sweetcorn that looks large enough to pick but there are no beards on them at all. Nothing ever showed. Are they ripe ?

Only one way to find out Marb. Carefully peel back the sheath and have a look at the kernels. If they look good then stick a fingernail into one of them. If the liquid that comes out is clear they're not ready, if it's milky coloured then they are.

And I was once told by an "Old Hat Gardener" as a visual indication! They must be hanging from the stalk at a 45 degree angle!
Works for me!Last edited by Deano's "Diggin It"; 30-09-2013, 08:55 PM."Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad"

Marb! As "Rusty" say's! Sweetcorn as to be planted "On Block"
It is wind pollinated, one plant blowing it's stuff on the other n doesn't rely on our little friendly buddies the bee,s n hover flies to do it for us!
The fact you only had two plants may have been your down fall! Not enough stuff floating about to do it!s Bizzi!
Better luck with it next year though!Attached Files"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad"
