  • Wood ash

Does anyone spread wood ash on the veg plot? Not sure where it's good and where it's bad. RHS say don't put it near roses but good for vegetables and compost. I think it may not be good for acid soils but we're pretty neutral here. And with loads of log ash from last winter's fires! It must be rich in potash.

Good round fruit bushes and trees.

I always sprinkle some around my fruit bushes and the rest goes into the compost bin.

I was looking on this website, it seems stoned fruit like wood ash but not apples and pears. Looks like its best to check your Ph before using on veg garden. Thanks everyone!

It seems to have other uses like getting rid of bugs, water plants then sprinkle on. Wash off in morning. Wonder if it would get my pesky caterpillars!

              I wouldn't have thought so.

If in doubt, just add it to the compost heap, where it'll be more balanced

I grow my greenhouse crops in pots. Woodash is quite mineral rich (K in particular), I add quite a bit to my compost mix for the pots.

The rest gets dug into the plot and sprinkled around the fruit bushes.

I have 3 beds of broccoli and one bed just happened to have a load of wood ash in it. This bed of plants is towering above the other 2

We put our wood ash on the onion beds, plus excess in the compost and hold some back for keeping slugs off the nursery beds. An all round resource
